Juan came to work this morning for an outing. Mondays are usually off days for the whole country club unless a company or group rents the course for the day. Golf Staff usually hates outings, so I was surprised Juan was in such a good mood today.
For 15 years, Juan always drove an old, beat up, green, pick-up truck. As we were standing at bag drop, once all the members had teed off, he says, “Margarita, you never believe the new interior I have in my truck.” Juan never spoils or spends money on himself, so I knew this interior was going to be amazing.
We walked over to the parking lot and get to the green truck. He then opens his front door and I peak in. The new interior wasn’t amazing. There wasn’t any new interior at all. The “new” interior was in fact the old interior, which had now been spray painted bright red, was still damp, and needed at least one to two more coats on it.
A few thoughts came to mind…Maybe he was on drugs, or lost a bet, or maybe red was his favorite color and he wanted all passengers to know that. I wasnt quite sure.
While we were admiring his artistry, I overheard co-workers walking through the parking lot looking around wondering which part of the parking lot had been newly painted and why wasn’t there a sign up to warn anyone.
I always try to be a good friend and tell the truth. So I told him he talked it up way too much so I expected maybe leather seats. I did however, give him my advice for the next paint job which was to spray paint it maybe a black, or a grey color, or even a neutral color…Red and green don’t look that great together.
He looked at me shook his head and walked away.
Later Juan told me “The Mexican flag, Margarita, is red and green so those colors are pretty great”.
